Physical Education & Sports Provision Impact Report

Executive Summary

In a small village primary school, physical education plays a crucial role in building confidence, physical health, and community links. By prioritizing specialized upskilling, critical water safety, and secondary school partnerships, the school provides a comprehensive PE curriculum that overcomes the limitations typical of small rural settings.

Provision & Impact

1. Sustainable Upskilling: Teacher Mentorship in Dance & PE

Instead of outsourcing physical education permanently to external providers, qualified coaches work alongside teaching staff during dance and general PE modules.

  • Direct Impact: Teachers build long-term confidence and technical expertise in delivery.
  • Sustainability: Ensures high-quality teaching persists beyond the presence of external coaches, creating a lasting legacy within the school's core curriculum.

2. Essential Life Skills: Universal Swimming Provision

Given the local geography—characterized by nearby rivers, open water, and drainage dykes—swimming and water safety are non-negotiable priorities.

  • Direct Impact: 100% pupil participation ensures every child achieves key water safety competencies and swimming proficiency before transitioning to secondary school.
  • Community Safety: Directly mitigates real-world local environmental risks, giving parents confidence regarding open-water hazards nearby.

3. Transition & Competition: Secondary School Partnerships

Small village schools often face challenges regarding competitive team sports due to smaller cohort sizes. Partnering with local secondary schools creates vital bridges.

  • Inter-School Tournaments: Pupils participate in structured competitive fixtures, building teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.
  • Transition Preparation: Regular exposure to secondary school facilities and staff eases anxiety surrounding Year 7 transition, fostering familiarity with larger educational environments.

What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is allocated to local authorities and schools with pupils on roll that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years, are looked after children or have parents serving in the armed forces. The funding allocation per pupil changes each year.

Our school has the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way we think will best address inequalities, tackle disadvantage and support the raising of attainment for our pupils.

A breakdown on how the Pupil Premium was spent last year including the impact of expenditure and our new provision plan for 2018 can be found in the document links on the right of this page.
